Meghan commutes to Palos Park from her house in Homewood whenever she has a spare hour or so, which is practically never these days. Finding time for AFA can be quite a challenge for Meghan, as she's in the Army Reserves and is frequently off to wild and wacky countries for weeks at a time. She also works full time as a firefighter and paramedic. Her plate is overflowing. I did ask her about her future goals and she responded, “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. I’m looking into a PhD program for possible Disaster Management. Can’t I just be independently wealthy and open an AFA II down south??”
Megan heard about AFA while surfing online one day to see if bats were legal to own. (hahaha). She fell in love with AFA and has been volunteering since early 2005 at the age of 25. Her duties used to include cleaning the foxes and lifting things that no one else can lift. She can also reach things most of us can't ;-) Now her duties are limited to the occasional assisting during educational programs. This is greatly appreciated, as she can lift the tortoise in his container by herself!
Meghan shares her home with many critters: 3 cats (Savio, Suma and Bug), 2 dogs (Satan and Gus) and a horse (Rockie Start). As you can imagine, horseback riding and showing her horse is one of her most cherished hobbies! So what's her favorite animal at AFA? She loves our huge Burmese python Zeus. Meghan does love snakes, so much so that we’ve been trying to get her to take one of our pythons, but she’s dragging her feet. We even gave her a beautiful cage, which I’m sure sits empty in her house!
If you ask Megan what her favorite part of volunteering with AFA is, she states, "Just knowing that a place like AFA exists and I can do something to help." So what's her least favorite part about volunteering? That she has no time to commit to volunteering. We at AFA second that thought. Meghan is an awesome volunteer who puts 110% into everything she does here. She jumped in with both feet from day one and hasn't required much help along the way since then. It's our desire that she succeeds in her goals, which we're confident she will, and eventually be able to come back on a regular basis!
